DIY Storage Shed Plans - Tools You Will Need!

One of your most important and often over looked tools needed to build your shed is a good set of construction plans. You may not consider this a tool but without it you will spend more time and money than is necessary and your shed project could be a real nightmare.
Once you have your plans you can see what type of wood and hardware you will need and then you can make sure you have the proper tools. At a minimum you will need a high quality hammer, a circular saw, a power or cordless drill and an assortment of hand-tools like screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers.

You will need a level, a framing square and chalk line. Also, if you are using a permanent foundation you will need a shovel, post-hole diggers and something to mix concrete in like a wheel barrow. Get a good set of work gloves as well.

You will need to finish your shed so you will need paint brushes or a paint sprayer as well. It is a good idea to have a reciprocating saw for odd cuts on wood that is in place but this is not necessary with proper planning. Again, the best tool of all is your set of plans.

One great thing about a high quality blue print is it will also list all the cut sizes you need to make and you can give this list to a lumber yard and for a nominal fee they will cut all the pieces to size for you and you simply put everything together like a big puzzle. This could save you tons of time and you will not need as many expensive power tools if you do it this way.

Backyard Storage Plans And Blueprints

If you want to construct your own shed there are a few things you need to consider. Without a set of plans, a material list or even an idea of what the final project will look like you are taking a huge risk for trouble. If you don't a lot of money for trial and error not to mention wasting your weekends then it might be a good idea to get a good set of plans - would you take off cross country to an unknown destination without a road map?

First lesson, check local building codes and if you belong to any type of home owner’s association get their approval as well. In order to do these two things you need a set of plans. I’ll tell you right now that the time and trouble saved buy just purchasing a good set of plans versus creating your own is well worth it.
Make sure your blueprints come with a complete material list as well as a cut chart showing you what size to cut your wood. This is pretty cool because you just buy your material and cut it all to size before you ever nail in your first nail. This is not something you can do when you do not have a professional set of construction plans.
Now, the next important thing to consider is the location of the shed and exactly what you will be using it for. Will it require an electric source as well? It is a good idea to design your shed to match your house or other out buildings on your property so it blends into the overall landscape.
Taking some time to consider these things will help the overall project run smoothly and will save you both time and money when you decide to build your own shed.

Do It Yourself Storage Shed Kits

Does a do it yourself shed kit make sense for you? If you have basic carpentry skills and some extra time on your hands, a new storage shed can be an extremely functional and economical addition to your property.

Prices vary quite a bit but the best thing about a kit is that all the hardware there for you as well as a complete list of the lumber that you need and that can save a lot of time and money.

No, a lot of do it yourself shed kits do not come with the actual wood necessary to build them. However, you do get all the brackets, screws, hinges and that sort of thing which is pretty cool. You can however, actually get kits that have everything included.

No matter what you choose, you will have to paint the shed as every kit I have ever seen comes with unfinished wood and the paint, stain or whatever you finish it with has to be purchased separately. Using a high quality finish, although more expensive than a generic economy brand, will allow your shed to retain its beauty and soundness for many years and will be worth the extra expense.

If you are a do it yourselfer and can use a power saw, then building a shed is not that hard and do it yourself shed kits are the easiest way to produce a quality, long lasting shed by far.

Need A Shed Ramp? DIY Shed Ramps Can Be Easy With The Right Plans!

Do you have a nice storage shed but need a ramp to get your lawn and garden equipment inside without damage to yourself or your equipment? Then a DIY shed ramp may be just what you are looking for!

Your ramp ideally should incline at a rate of 3” per vertical foot. If it is too steep it could cause difficulties in a  number of ways. Example number one, if you have a driving lawn mower with a belly blade on it the belly will hit the entrance to the shed if your ramp is to steep.

Also, the type of wood you build the ramp with (if not the right type) can get algae build up on it ...when wet it can be slippery as ice and you know the rest of this story!
So, It is important to have the proper slope on your ramp remember not to steep. Next you need to make sure you build it sturdy to handle the weight it will be subject to. A 200+  man riding on a 300+ lawn tractor can put a lot of stress on the ramp..again not good!

It would be ideal to use 4” X 4” pressure treated framing set no more than 12” apart and use ¾” pressure treated plywood for your ramp surface. It is alos ideal to use either non-skid or rubber decking to prevent slipping when the ramp is wet.

Need A Dog House? Get A Set Of Dog House Plans & Create Your Own!

Building a dog house may sound like a fairly easy task… and it can be. However, the job will not go as smooth if you don't have a good set of dog house plans and should be a serious consideration before you spend hard earned money on material and think you can just design the house on the fly.

Now you may think it is not too difficult to draw up your own design for a dog house and construct it over the course of a weekend. Now, while this is doable you will actually save money getting a good set of plans or blueprints because they generally come with all the materials and hardware you need so you can budget accordingly. A good set of plans is as valuable as a road map on a cross country trek. If you are not a design genius you want to make sure you have enough money and limit the trips to the hardware store and having a good plan will allow you to grab everything you need on the first visit. Having a good set of doghouse plans allows you to go through all the steps you need to take before actually talking them and prevent any unnecessary problems that could arise, remembering that the safety and comfort of your dog is at stake.
Having the right blueprint to work from will save time and money as well as headaches and it is much easier to make changes on a set of plans than to draw them up from scratch.

Need A Garage? You Can Build It With Good Garage Plans!

When it comes to a nice piece of real estate nothing beats a spacious well designed garage. However if you purchased a home without one the idea of building it yourself may be a bit overwhelming unless you have a good set of garage plans. If you can read and understand a blueprint and have the necessary tools you could be on your way to an awesome addition to your home and it will increase the value of your property!

Due to the nature of our economic climate if you have the garage plans but not the time or skill there are lots of out of work builders that would be eager to have the job and you are in the position to negotiate a good price. Also if you have the blueprint and a materials list you can get the supplies yourself and save even more because with most construction jobs the materials are marked up if they are getting them for you.

Having a selection of different garage plans is beneficial because it gives you various options to choose from because not everyone’s lot size is the same and you may have special needs like a drive through door or other considerations.
